Four revisited altered text drawings I made in 2014 when I was making a lot of work using text which I obliterated and altered to suit. This collage shows 4 details. Reading the image from top left in a clockwise direction, here is what was going through my mind at the time.

21 JANUARY : NEW WORK UNDERWAY!

21/1/2019

Once again I have ink-stained fingers from cleaning my Rotring technical pens, trying to persuade them to work after a long hiatus while we moved house last year. It took two hours of Saturday plus Sunday morning to restore them because they had been left unused lying on their sides for so long. There was ink everywhere, but the joy when they finally started running again made it all worthwhile! It was like being reunited with very old friends I hadn’t seen for quite some time. I find the quality of the line gut-deep inspirational and it makes me want to get going.

Current sketchbook using an old duplicate notebook of my Dad's. It has printed on the jacket: "Supplied for the Public Service, HMSO Code 28-600 Duplicate Manifold Book". The Duplicate Manifold aspect no longer works, but I can put carbon paper in and replicate its original function if I want to. I like the colour and aged quality of the papers in the book: some are white and some beige.  Right now I am mixing ideas of my own together with technical templates my Dad used in his plan drawings - it's like throwing ideas into the wind and seeing where they take me. I lost my Dad in 2017, he died on the first anniversary of my Mum's death: two wonderful people, talented and filled with love, together again at peace but always with me. I like to think I can collaborate with them both.

7 JANUARY: 2018 REVIEW

2018: A YEAR IN REVIEW
From top left, reading left to right in rows.
JANUARY was all about Lush bath bombs (spoiling myself), ColorPop - and I bought my first stylus, a Heiyo, to use with iPad
FEBRUARY Finishing Brave Oleander, the title piece of my pending show in April
MARCH the Beast from the East blew into Fife on the last day of February, making March a time of interesting scenes set against white
APRIL my first solo exhibition! The Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh, hosted my show and it was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who visited and purchased my work, and above all to the Open Eye people who made it such a pleasure to exhibit.
MAY exhibition over, it was time to move house. Dusty collections of textiles had to be washed before packing, and made this gloriously colourful display as they were pegged out on the dog-pen fencing to dry in the mountain air
JUNE house move going strong, B being a hero at house renovations while I packed up the boxes and the rooms gradually emptied out
JULY seeing things in the excoriated surfaces of skips, the exposed floors in the house, and my old familiar pareidolia I would stare at on the walls collected as keepsakes
AUGUST about to leave the old house, I made sketches of all my favourite angles and nooks as a farewell; also had some very strange dreams from our improvised bed once the furniture had gone
SEPTEMBER I discovered Procreate and my life (as Binky McKee) expanded and everything began to fall into place
OCTOBER I joined Inktober from my Binky McKee Instagram account (on day 19, a bit late) as a side-line to a children's book I am still illustrating
NOVEMBER What can I say? It was all about Folktale Week, and what a wonderful week of discovery it was!
DECEMBER All about making Christmas cards once the decorations were up. Then cooking, cooking, entertaining, and cooking some more.

<<<<<<< !!!!! A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS 2019 TO EVERYONE !!!!! >>>>>>>

What a year it has been, a year of changes on every front and level. My goal for 2019 is to continue with the growth I found in 2018, be thankful, and keep learning.

Thanks for visiting, see you next week!

Welcome to my work journal. I usually post here once a week on Sunday, but there are often 'bonus' posts in between of interesting things like growing carrot tops and avocado pits, the odd piece of work I do as Binky, and news items.
    Thanks for stopping by!

As well as the work you see here, I illustrate under the name of Binky McKee (my mother's maiden name was McKee, Binky was every single one of my great grandmother's many cats!)
