I am spending a couple of days back in my notebooks. I know I want some kind of whipping form for the top left of Before There Were Saturdays, but not sure exactly what kind of line.
The water-line is in place, nice clear water above the silt of the swamp. Things are drifting and floating and emerging into the air.
I invent my forms as I go with my drawings. I have my 'rules', and the mark-making is largely responsible for the resulting form. I was quite happy inventing totally new ways to represent insects and beasties - then I saw these!

As well as the work you see here, I illustrate under the name of Binky McKee (my mother's maiden name was McKee, Binky was every single one of my great grandmother's many cats!)

Candle-light shadows. I set up little 'night theatres' in my bedroom. As darkness falls, I light strategically placed candles and watch the plays begin. A perfect activity for the darkest days of winter.
